Amar Singh Mangat was born in Kenya in 1935 and educated at Duke of Gloucester School Nairobi.

He played for Sikh Union Nairobi Club and was the Club's Sportsman of the Year in 1968. He captained the team that won the M R D'Souza Gold Cup in Kenya in 1963 and was made a Life Member of the Club in 1969 for services rendered as a player and administrator.

He migrated to Canada in July 1969 and took up active role in hockey and became a FIH Umpire in 1976.

He died on Wednesday 28 September 2022 in Calgary, Canada.
