Sikhs in Hockey in Fiji

Sikhs have been playing hockey in Fiji since the early 1960s. David Bennion from Blue Star Hockey Club, Lautoka, Fiji recalls that Jaswant Singh played for Fiji in the earlier years to him as a Full back. Jaswant Singh also represented Fiji in Cricket and was quite an accomplished opening batsman.

David states that he played with Deo Singh for the Fiji National Representative Team in the 1980s. They both participated in the 1981 Oceania Hockey Tournament that was held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea and won the Bronze Medal. Teams that took part were Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Queensland State Reps (Australia) and Australian Country Reps. Deo played right back and David was the goalkeeper.
