Sukhvir Singh Grewal was born in Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, India and educated at Yadavindra Public School, Patiala; Senior Model School, Ludhiana and Government College, Ludhiana (affiliated to Punjab University, Chandigarh).

He played for Indian Airlines in India and Grossflottbeker Club, Hamburg in Germany.

He earned his first international cap on 29.12.1975 when he was selected to play for India against Singapore in Madras (now Chennai).

He played at Asian Games in 1978, The 4th World Cup in Buenos Aires in 1978, Champions Trophy in Karachi, Pakistan in 1980 and Asia Cup in 1982.

Injury forced him to retire from playing international hockey and he turned to Coaching.
